Among the statues residing in College Hall was an oversized depiction of 19th-century activist Harriet Martineau. All members of every freshman class experienced "going through Harriet," wherein each young woman was pushed and/or pulled through the rungs of Harriet's great chair.
There once was a statue called "The Backwoodsman" that stood on the south porch of College Hall. He was not a favorite of the students, and one year for some reason a group decided he needed to be washed. They scrubbed him annually from 1895 until 1912, when he mysteriously vanished.
Each May Day in the early 1900s, the sophomore class formed the numerals of the senior class. College Hall burned on March 17, 1914, leaving the haunting, charred ruin of the College's main building to serve as a sad backdrop when the Class of 1916 honored the seniors.
